Durness

Beyond Smoo Cave is the village of Durness. Despite how remote it feels, this is a vibrant community. There is a beach here, or arguably 3 beachs - Sangomore Beach, Durness Beach and Durness Bay, separated from each other by jutting out pieces of headland. Here is also the location of Sango Sands campsite, a very popular overnight stop on the NC500.

Although Durness is a gazillion miles from the nearest supermarket, there is a handy and well-stocked store in the village, which is useful if you need to pick up a few supplies.

Just beyond the village itself is Balnakeil Craft Village. This unusual place was built in the 1950s as a Ministry of Defence early warning centre in the event of a nuclear attack. However, it was never used and in the 1960s it was transformed into a craft village. Now it is home to several artists and is an interesting visitors attraction, including the popular Chocolate Mountain, chocolatiers.

Notes for visitors with limited mobility:

Durness and Balnakeil Craft Village is suitable for visitors with limited mobility, but the beaches require a walk/scramble down to them.
