Forss is the last hamlet you will drive through before reaching Thurso 3 miles later. You may spot a signpost off to the left to Forss Business and Energy Park, which has a variety of business units as well as 6 wind turbines. From a tourist point of view, it is worth going down here to visit the North Point artisan distillery. Here you can buy their products and you can also book on a distillery tour.
A little further beyond this, the road takes a sweeping bend to the left and runs through the hamlet of Forss. Here the Forss Water runs under the bridge and meanders past the old mill building on its way towards the sea.
The mill building is a 19th Century grain mill, which has been preserved and is now owned privately. The mill building sits in front of a waterfall, not easily visible from the road.
The fast road, the sweeping bend and no obvious roadside parking makes it a difficult place to stop. There are also signs up indicating that it is private land and it is not welcoming for visitors. However, if you go down the driveway to the Forss House Hotel, there is a little space on the left where you can stop briefly and walk to the view of the river and the waterfall. The hotel offers afternoon tea, evening meals and a bar so maybe stop a while and enjoy their hospitality.
More obvious from the road is the mature beech woodland that forms a shady tunnel to drive through, and the little cottage sitting amongst it like a fairy tale woodcutter's cottage.
