Achininver Beach

Off the beaten track, this impressive large sandy beach is the perfect place for a day of family fun.

This is an unexpected gem of a beach in an unlikely location beyond Talmine. If you fancy having a family fun day on a beach away from the crowds, then continue on the road to Midfield and Port Vasgo but take the left fork to Achininver Beach. With no through traffic, it isn't the sort of place you come across by accident so it is amazing that anyone else finds their way here, but they do.

There is space at the side of the road for 2 or 3 vehicles to park. Take a moment to take in the view from here across the beach and then take a short but steep walk down to the beach.

This long sandy beach has a river running through it and sandy pools can form as the tide goes out, which can be a fun place to paddle and play. The streams and patches of water can be useful as the tide goes out as it can be quite a walk to the sea at low tide!

Towards the back of the beach, where the stream enters, there are rocks with squashed pebbles in them, deformed deep underground millions of years ago. There are also abundant red garnet crystals in the rocks and as they weather away, the sand here can take on a pink hue with their accumulation.

Notes for visitors with limited mobility:

There is parking off road next to the sign for Achininver Beach but this is high above the beach and the access down is unsuitable for people with limited mobility. It does offer lovely views across this beautiful beach though.
