Sutherland's only town, Dornoch, is famous for the Royal Dornoch golf course and for Madonna having her son christened in the cathedral. However, it has a long history and there is plenty to do here.
Dornoch can be reached from the A9 by taking the B9168, or, if you were seal-watching at Skelbo, then continue to follow the road round, perhaps taking a detour off to enjoy Embo Beach.
The famous golf course, ranked to be the 5th best golf-course outside the United States, is a naturally formed links amongst the sand dunes edging the beach. The beach itself is a Blue Flag beach, and there is a campsite alongside too so all in all it is a busy touristy area.
Back in the centre of town, the main street has the historic cathedral on it, dating from the thirteenth century, and the Old Jail House has now been converted into several gift shops.
Notes for visitors with limited mobility:
The main street in Dornoch is suitable for wheelchair users, although there are some steps up and down into the buildings.
