This area is an absolute must-visit for anyone interested in wildlife and boasts several different habitats, offering homes for a multitude of different species from rare flora to seabirds and mammals.
In fact, before you leave Golspie, you can take the road signposted to Little Ferry which takes you alongside Golspie Golf Course. Beyond that, the road runs through a beautiful woodland, before finishing at a car park next to a short walk through the dunes to the far end of Golspie beach.
Alternatively, leave Golspie via the A9 and look for the left turn opposite Culmaily. This straight road takes you to a car park that is convenient for a walk into the woods and a short way in, you will come across a bird hide overlooking the mud flats of the estuary. This environment attracts a great number of wading birds, although what you might see from the hide on the day is all a matter of chance!
If you would like to see seals, then continue on the A9, across the bridge at the neck of the estuary and then take the left turn signposted Skelbo. This narrow road runs along the edge of the estuary and offers plenty of opportunities to spot seals, however, for the sake of your safety and other road users, please pull over into the purpose-built laybys to concentrate fully on your seal-watching.
Notes for visitors with limited mobility:
The forest walk and walk to the beach from Little Ferry is relatively easy but not suitable for wheelchair users. The seals can be enjoyed from the car or from the edge of the parking bay for all visitors.
